Instructions to Help You Learn How to Paper Quill

!±8± Instructions to Help You Learn How to Paper Quill

If you want to learn how to paper quill, the best thing you can do is to find a set of instructions and follow them carefully. Depending on the shape you want to make from the coiled paper, the instructions will tell you the size of the strips of paper that you need. Usually bought instructions call for a quill that you buy in a craft store, but you can achieve the same result with a simple toothpick. It is important to use the right kind of paper, such as construction paper or card stock. Ordinary writing paper is not a good choice because it will bunch when you take it off the quill, (the winding tool, such as a toothpick) and it will tear very easily.

You do not use a scissors to cut the paper when quilling. Rather you tear the paper into strips. To make sure the strips are all of uniform size, use a ruler to mark the measurement and the ruler or some other flat edge to use as a guide for tearing. When you use a scissors to cut the paper into strips, the sharp edge will be very noticeable in the finished product, whereas the torn edges will look natural.

You also have to take note of the different technique you should use depending on the quilling tool you use. If you use a slotted quill, you move the quill to turn the paper. If you use a toothpick or a needle, you have to wind the paper around the quill. These instructions are for using a slotted quill because using other ordinary tools does require a certain amount of skill in this craft.

Moisten the paper a little and fit it into the slot on the top of the quill. Make sure that you only have a tiny bit of paper protruding through the slot. Hold the tool in one hand and the paper in the other between your thumb and index finger. Then slowly turn the quill so that the paper winds around it, making sure that the paper winds evenly around the tip. Keep the edges of the paper lined up and don't exert more pressure at one point of the turning. You have to keep the same pressure on the paper at all times when you are winding.

Once you come to the end of the strip, turn the quill upside down and let the roll slide off into your hand. You still have to keep it in its roll because if you don't it will simply uncoil, even though it will uncoil a little, but it is supposed to do that. Then you take a toothpick and dab a little bit of glue to the end of the strip and let it stick to the center of the coil. You can hold it in place with your fingers or use tweezers to hold it place until the glue dries.

Once you have the coil made, then you can manipulate in by pinching parts of it to make various shapes that you can glue together.

Tips For Using an Old Book to Created a Craft Piece

!±8± Tips For Using an Old Book to Created a Craft Piece

Do you ever wish you had something crafty to do with your old, unwanted bokos? The new trend is to turn them into crafty works of art! Encyclopedias and even mystery novels can all be easily transformed into 'altered books'. Small treasures and collectibles can be displayed in altered books. If this idea tickles your crafty side, follow this method for creating your own altered book.

You'll need the following materials:
- An old hardcover book
- Sheet of sandpaper
- Paper towels
- Craft glue
- Manila folder
- Sharp knife
- Craft primer (like Gesso)
- Craft paint and paintbrushes
- Your choice of decorations - ribbon, transfers, stamps, beads, etc.

Rub down the volume. You will need to prepare your book before you can start to decorate your altered book. Begin by sanding the edges of all of the book's pages. It might be a good idea to also sand the book cover in case it seems too slick for the paint to adhere to. Afterwards, make sure to blow the dust off.

Prime the cover. A primer should be used on the book to ready it for painting. Have you ever used the craft paint primer by Gesso? - it's awesome. The primer will be used to paint the spine of the book and also the front and back covers. After it dries, paint over the very center pages after opening the book. To prevent paint seepage down the altered book sides, painter's masking tape should be used over the edges.

The next step in the process is to cut the folder. Begin creating the atmosphere of your book when the paint has dried. This is the part where you will use your manila folder. It will need to be able to fit into your altered book so measure your cut to the exact size of the center pages. Next, remove it. Then, using a ruler, make a square on the folder as your guideline for where you will cut out the windows (cavities).

Copy the window guidelines over to your book. Now you want your windows to be transferred to your altered book, so use your sharp knife to cut out the windows. You will have to slice right into the book's pages down to the desired depth. Every window can vary in depth. Figure out the content to be put in each window, and then its associated depth.

The windows could use a good painting, but make sure that you use the primer first. After you cut out the windows from the book, you should apply paint to them (if you wish, prime first). Make sure to only paint the areas inside the windows. Now leave, allowing the book to dry with the pages fanned out and not touching so that they won't dry together.

Use an adhesive to tack the pages together. After letting the paint dry, you need to decide which pages of your book you want to bind together. You must wait until the glue dries once you glue them and clip them together. Extra or dripping glue should be wiped away with a paper towel.

Adorn your newly modified book. You can decorate your book once the windows are done. Begin with a primary coat of pain on the cover and middle pages. You will have an individual creation by adding your own decorations.

How to Make Your Own Stencils

!±8± How to Make Your Own Stencils

Stencil art is popular. It is a great way to redecorate your home or create art pieces. Moreover stencil art is fun.

Since stencils are very common there are a lot of templates available both online and at the DIY and hobby shops. However sometimes making our own stencil is what we really want. If you are eager to try creating a custom design, read on to find out how to make your own stencil.

First let's see what tools and materials are required for stencil making. A firm surface is required for cutting the stencils. A cutting board or a piece of thick carton is good enough for this purpose. The cutting is done with a craft knife. You will also need a piece of stiff plastic or another transparent material and a low-tack tape.

Obviously you will need the design of the stencil you are going to create. You can draw it on paper and get it enlarged on a photocopier. If you are not going to draw the design than use an image - just print it and get it into the size required.

Now it is time to cut the stencil. Place the print out (or your drawing) over the cutting board and place the plastic over it. Than use a sharp craft knife to cut the plastic through. If you feel your knife is not that sharp, cut the blade and than continue cutting. It is of utmost importance to use a very sharp knife otherwise the stencil quality will be poor.

Cut one line at a time. You can start with the longest lines or the straighter ones. These are the easiest and will help you get used to cutting. Rotate the cutting board to ease cutting. It is best to use tape so that the print and the plastic do not move.

Once you have cut the whole design, you are done. There is only one thing that should be done - check out the edges of the stencil. If there are some rough edges try to soften them to prevent paint gather in there.

Once your stencil is cut, you can start painting. Use a stencil brush or a sponge to apply the paint. Apply a think layer of paint at a time. It you need to apply a second and even a third layer of paint after the first one is dry. Wash the stencil if you are going to use it again in future and store it flat in a box or between the pages of a book.
